What is Gummed Paper?

Gummed paper is a veneer tape with one side coated in an adhesive substance that becomes sticky when moistened. This substance is traditionally Arabic gum but can also be made of other vegetable adhesives, such as potato starch.

What are the uses of gummed paper with wood veneer?

Gummed paper is used to splice several veneer sheets side by side, thus preventing the joints from opening during gluing. It is also used to reinforce closed splits, such as handling splits.

In the case of marquetry, it is used to splice all the pieces that fit together like a puzzle.

Why is gummed paper perforated?

First of all, the holes allow you to see what you are doing, check the correct positioning of the strip, and ensure that the veneer is always tightly joined.

Now, there is another reason for professionals and manufacturers to use perforated paper: it's time-saving; indeed, perforated paper is especially thin and can be sanded down easily.

On top of that, the gummed paper is usually positioned on the visible side of the veneers to be removed after gluing it to its support. However, in some cases, it is possible to glue the perforated paper to the hidden face that will be glued to the support; this allows the glue to adhere to the wood through the holes in the strip.

Reserve this method only for exceptional cases, such as reinforcing an assembly at the ends if you need to handle the spliced veneers beyond a simple sliding on the destination support.

How to use gummed paper?

After a clean cut of the veneers, position two sheets side by side.

Tear a small piece of gummed paper and pass the glued side over a damp sponge.

Place the piece of gummed paper across the joint while holding the two veneer sheets firmly edge to edge.

Repeat the operation, spacing the gummed paper pieces. I like to space them every 15 to 20 cm approximately; of course, this depends on the total length of the piece.

Finish the joining with a strip of paper that will cover the entire joint and thus reinforce the whole.

How to remove gummed paper?

Simply pass a damp sponge over the gummed paper and, if necessary, scrape the moistened paper with a scraper (small steel plate with sharp edges). The traces of glue and paper will come off with sanding.
